Throughout the 21st century, Spain has been one of the dominant forces in European football, with La Liga amongst the top five leagues in the continent. Possessing some of the biggest sides in the world, the domestic game is usually dominated by just a handful of teams, but due to the amount of quality across all of them, the La Liga betting markets are always interesting to keep an eye on.
The Spaniards play a unique, attractive brand of football that transcends the rest of the world, with Real Madrid attempting to win their 15th Champions League title as they take on Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
With that in mind, let’s look at the last five winners of La Liga and assess how each team won their respective titles. Read on to find out more.
Real Madrid – 2023-24
Carlo Ancelotti’s second stint at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has been littered with trophies and whether or not Real Madrid add another Champions League to their cabinet, they have been so dominant domestically this season, picking up 95 points to win La Liga – just five off the record set by José Mourinho.
Despite losing current Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema last summer, Madrid invested in Jude Bellingham from Dortmund, signing the England international for £88 million and his goals fired Los Blancos to the title in his debut year.
Barcelona – 2022-23
Another giant in La Liga, Barcelona won their 27th title under La Masia graduate Xavi in the 2022-23 season. Utilising the transfer market, Barça brought in the likes of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski in attack, while Jules Koundé and Andreas Christensen ensured just 20 goals were conceded all season on route to finishing 10 points clear of Madrid, winning their first title win since Lionel Messi left in 2021.
Real Madrid –2021-22
The meritocracy of Madrid was demonstrated in the 2021-22 season as they picked up a remarkable double that included a strong La Liga campaign. Benzema enjoyed the best season of his career, finding the back of the net 44 times in all competitions, with 27 in the league winning him the Pichichi Trophy, as Ancelotti returned to win the title with 86 points before beating Liverpool in Paris to add the Champions League.
Atlético Madrid – 2020-21
Diego Simeone is one of the most respected managers in Europe, and his longevity with Atlético Madrid is a sight to behold. In 2020-21, the Colchoneros captured their first La Liga title since 2014, in a season that was largely played behind closed doors due to the pandemic.
The title race was closely contested all season, with Atleti requiring a win on the final day away against Valladolid. Things took a turn for the worst when the hosts went 1-0 up at half-time, but the South American duo of Ángel Correa and Luis Suárez snatched the title away from Barcelona, the club who had sold Suárez the summer before, and Atlético lifted their 11th La Liga crown.
Real Madrid – 2019-20
The 2019-20 La Liga season was a strange one due to the pandemic disrupting the business end of the campaign. Both Real and Barcelona were neck and neck for large parts of the season, but Quique Setién’s Barça imploded after the summer restart.
After humiliation at Camp Nou in the Champions League to Bayern Munich, in which they were beaten 8-2 in a one-legged quarter-final, they surrendered the league title to Real Madrid, dropping valuable points to finish four behind Los Blancos.
It proved to be Zinedine Zidane’s last trophy in charge at the Bernabéu but the first Madrid had won since selling Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, with Benzema’s 21 goals enough to secure the league.
